Icons Explained
Our grades have been designated
based on our perception of the degree of physical
activity and the level of mental resilience
you are likely to require to enjoy the adventure.
Everyone has their own idea of what constitutes
an easy or challenging adventure, but the following
grades have been designed to give you an accurate
idea of what will be involved.
Explanation of Grade Symbols
Gentle
Well within the physical capabilities and mental
resilience of people of all ages and fitness
levels, who are in good health.
Moderate
Within the physical capabilities and mental
resilience of most people, who are in good health.
A modicum of general fitness including reasonable
cardiovascular stamina is required. Some conditions
may be more rudimentary than you are used to
at home.
Challenging
Requires good levels of general fitness, good
health, reliable cardiovascular stamina and
the ability to persevere at times. A trip may
also be challenging in the respect of basic
conditions on certain itineraries in countries
with less developed tourism infrastructures.
Strenuous
Demanding both physically and mentally for some
key parts of the adventure. Restrictions on
ability may exclude certain people. Must be
prepared to put up with some hardship, and not
expect things always to go according to plan.
Touching Madness
To quote Skydiver Phil Smith, who parachuted
into the lost world of Cerro Autana, Venezuela,
to make a film with the BBC Natural History
Unit, 'If you're going to be stupid, you'd better
be toughâ! These adventures are for those
looking for a very serious challenge where success
is by no means guaranteed, and which tests the
body, mind and soul to the fullest.
